The Garden District, originally developed in the 1840s, is considered to be one of the largest, best kept collections of historic Southern mansions in the United States. The district is located south of the French Quarter, and stretches from Louisiana Avenue to Magazine Street, and from Josephine to Carondelet streets. Named for the breathtaking gardens that once almost dwarfed the stately homes, the district is now better known for its characteristic southern architecture.
