The Amistad Research Center was created to help defend the 53 West African slaves who, in 1839, were prisoners aboard the tiny schooner, Amistad, and who rose up to defend their international human rights. The museum is located on Tulane Campus, in Tilton Memorial Hall. Today, the center holds the writings of prestigious scholars and artists, as well as over 250,000 photographs relating to the history of slavery.
